South East London (Blackheath, Bermondsey, Surrey Quays, Camberwell, Abbey Wood, Woolwich)
South East London might just be London’s best-kept housing secret, with lots of charming areas with great atmosphere at cheaper prices than can be found in the North.
Surrey Quays has undergone major refurbishment and building in the past decades. Local officials rebuilt this former dockyard and now it includes a new shopping centre and underground station of the same name.
A similar transformation has taken place in Bermondsey; the area called Butler’s Wharf was rebuilt after years of standing idle into one of London’s most expensive and exclusive areas. Camberwell is a bold mix of ethnicities and cultures, including Caribbean, Middle Eastern and Indian. It is also an area filled with student flatshares.
Blackheath retains a quaint feel and has many young families and young professionals living in shared houses in the area.
Eat at Laicram in Blackheath for an intimate portrait of Thai food. Locals lament the fact that this spot is always full, including on weeknights! If you decide on a Greenwich flatshare, you’ll discover that Greenwich Market is the local place to spend Saturday -- hunting through the stalls for a treasured antique or craft.
Many locals maintain that Blackheath gets its name from the burial of victims of The Plague in the 14th century. They say this also prevents the development of the land of Blackheath’s Heath, which to this day remains an open space.
South East London is a great place to choose your flatshare room and many predict that its popularity will only increase in the future. |
