East London (East Ham, Bow, Docklands, Mile End, Shoreditch)
East London holds a popular and fashionable part of London. Much of the area, such as the Docklands, has undergone major development in recent years and it also includes Shoreditch, London’s current capital of Bohemia — even fashion designer Alexander McQueen lives here!
The Docklands are comprised of former parts of the Port of London that have been redeveloped and converted into residential and commercial properties. The Docklands continue to grow and develop as an area of London. Bow is mostly residential as is East Ham, an area heavily populated with South Asians and Eastern Europeans.
Shoreditch and Hoxton (centred around Hoxton Square) make up London’s contemporary Bohemia. The area spills over with artists and their varied work; check out Curtain Road and Old Street for all sorts of entertainment, from museums and galleries to fine dining.
For an American-style eat, try the Arkansas Café in Old Spitalfields Market. You’ll find juicy steak, potato salad and baked beans, all served up on a paper plate by a man named Bubba. Legendary! Or hop off to The Eagle, London’s very first gastropub and munch Mediterranean food alongside good old British pints.
The East Ham Nature Reserve is the perfect place to commune with nature, while Spitalfields Market is ideal for sourcing out London’s trendiest jewellery, clothing and antiques.
East London is an area full of culture and change -- it’s literally where London’s at. Many people choose East London for their London flatshares and shared houses and it’s easy to see why. It’s definitely a great place to live for those who want to be a part of that change and culture!
